What is "Greywater Recycling"?

At present, all the water that is used in your bath, shower, handbasin, washing machine and dishwasher goes down the plughole, into the drainpipe, and is taken away, along with the sewage, to be treated at a water treatment plant before being released into the rivers and flowing out to sea.

But this water is not so filthy dirty that it needs to be treated as sewage! Instead, it can be diverted and taken to a storage tank sited underground in your garden, where it is cleaned, filtered and then pumped the short distance back into your house for reuse. It is then used inside for flushing the loos and, outside, for washing the car, the driveway, the windows and watering the garden.

If you were to combine rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling, you could meet up to 95% of your total water needs.

The only water you would need to buy from the water companies would be your drinking water, which is about 2 litres per person, per day.

So, no worries for you when water meters become compulsory!

But more importantly, think about how this will have a very positive impact on the environment?

By reusing your waste water in this way, you will make more efficient use of the rainwater that falls on your roof, and thus reducing the carbon footprint of the water industry as a whole.
